For three months, Wednesday has been the best day to be downtown without a wallet. Free parking at every city garage and surface lot, all day and all night, no meter running while you eat dinner at Barcelona Wine Bar or catch sunset drinks near the beach. That ends August 26. Six days later, Downtown Delray Restaurant Month opens with more than 50 restaurants running specials for the entire month of September, and Drinking Pig BBQ is aiming to finally open its doors at Sundy Village. The free ride and the crowded month are about to trade places, and if you've been putting off a downtown night out because summer felt too quiet to bother, the math is about to flip on you.
Why Wednesday, Specifically
The free parking program wasn't a blanket giveaway. When the Delray Beach Downtown Development Authority first floated the idea, the ask was bigger: free parking at all city-owned garages and lots west of the Intracoastal bridge every day until 4 p.m., plus one day that stayed free around the clock. Commissioners Tom Markert and Angela Burns and Mayor Tom Carney pushed back, citing budget concerns, and the compromise that survived was narrower. Wednesday won the slot for a specific reason: it's the day many downtown restaurants and shops are already closed on Monday or Tuesday, so giving Wednesday a boost fills a real gap in the week rather than padding a day that was already busy.
The reason the city felt pressure to act at all traces back further. Parking rates in the downtown core went up under a Curbside and Parking Management Plan that had been in motion since 2019, and the Downtown Development Authority told commissioners that traffic dipped and seasonal crowds thinned once the higher rates kicked in. One longtime resident put it plainly to a local TV reporter: "I've lived here my whole life and the parking has become outrageous." That frustration is what produced Free Parking Wednesdays, running from June 3 through August 26 at the Old School Square, Federspiel, and IPIC garages, plus the Roy M. Simon, Village, Gladiola, Veterans Park, and Banker's Row surface lots. Street parking and private lots were never part of the deal.
The Three Wednesdays You Have Left
As of today, the calendar gives you exactly three more free Wednesdays before the meters start running again on the one day of the week that's been giving you a break:
- August 12
- August 19
- August 26 (the last one)
After that, every day of the week costs the same to park downtown, Wednesday included.
What's Already Worth the Drive
Here's the part that gets missed in most roundups: you don't have to wait for Restaurant Month to eat well downtown. Several kitchens that people are still treating as "new" have been open long enough to be dialed in.

None of these need a countdown clock. They're already running, already staffed up, and already have the kind of table availability that gets tighter once Restaurant Month specials start pulling crowds in September.
What Lands Right After the Meters Come Back
The timing gets more interesting once you look at what's landing in the weeks right after free parking ends. Drinking Pig BBQ, the Miami barbecue operation known for oak-smoked brisket with Caribbean and Asian influences, is targeting a September opening at 22 W Atlantic Ave inside Sundy Village. Chef Raheem Sealey has said the Delray menu will lean into more sandwiches and sides than the Miami original, built with what he calls the office workers and residents of Delray Beach in mind.
Maman, the French café known for its SoHo original and a chocolate chip cookie that once made Oprah's favorite things list, is still working toward an opening date inside a converted cottage in the Sundy Village neighborhood. Co-founder Elisa Marshall has described it as designed to look like a small beach house, with an expansive outdoor seating area. No firm month has been announced.
And then there's Restaurant Month itself. From September 1 through September 30, more than 50 restaurants, cafés, and fast-casual spots across downtown run prix fixe lunch and dinner menus, happy hour deals, café specials, and cooking classes, all through a free mobile pass that lets you check in and earn points toward prizes. It's the single busiest promotional stretch on the downtown calendar, and it starts six days after the last free Wednesday.
The Irony of August 27 and 28
Two of the summer's last big gatherings fall just after the free parking window closes, which means the events built to send summer off are also the first ones where you'll pay to park for them. Sounds of The Set brings live music to Libby Wesley Plaza on Thursday, August 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The next night, Friday, August 28, Old School Square hosts "Party in Paradise," a Jimmy Buffett tribute running 5 to 10 p.m. Both are exactly the kind of evenings people plan a Wednesday-adjacent parking strategy around, except this year the strategy runs out the week before.
How to Actually Use What's Left
If you've been meaning to get downtown before things get loud, here's a straightforward way to use the time that's actually left:
- Pick one of the three remaining Wednesdays and park at Old School Square, Federspiel, or IPIC garage. All three sit within a short walk of Atlantic Avenue and Pineapple Grove.
- Eat somewhere already dialed in. Table 165 or Gabriella's Modern Italian will have shorter waits now than they will once Restaurant Month specials start pulling in bigger crowds.
- Walk it off in Pineapple Grove. The murals and galleries are worth the fifteen minutes, and it's one block off Atlantic.
- Save Restaurant Month for when you want the busier version. Once September hits, the same restaurants will be running prix fixe deals, but you'll be feeding a meter to get there.
- Circle August 26 on your calendar. It's the last day this particular version of downtown exists, at least until next summer.
