"August and September are the slowest time of the year here in South Florida."
The Boca Raton Tribune quoted Laura Simon, executive director of the Delray Beach Downtown Development Authority, explaining why the DDA stacked its biggest dining promotion into the two months when the town emptied out. It was a strange time to throw a party for restaurants. It was also the smartest one, because Restaurant Month was never really aimed at the winter crowd that filled Atlantic Avenue from December through April. It was aimed at whoever was still eating dinner out in Delray when that crowd was gone.
This year's edition ran September 1 through 30, marking the 11th time the DDA had run it. More than 50 restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops and fast-casual spots participated, and for people within walking distance of downtown, the list was worth reading closely, not just for what was on it but for what wasn't.
The Discount Exists Because the Season Doesn't
Simon's point wasn't a throwaway line. Restaurants in a seasonal beach town make their money in a compressed window, and the stretch right after Labor Day is when reservations thin out and kitchens start looking for reasons to fill tables that would otherwise sit empty on a Tuesday. Restaurant Month is that reason. Prix fixe lunch and dinner menus, happy hour deals, café promotions and the occasional wine pairing dinner are the DDA's way of giving locals a discount for doing something they were probably going to do anyway: eat dinner three miles from home.
Signing up cost nothing. The DDA introduced a free mobile pass this year, accessible at DowntownDelrayBeach.com/RestaurantMonth, and no app download was required. Diners checked in at each participating restaurant as they dined, and the pass tracked their visits.
The tracking wasn't just bookkeeping. It was a loyalty structure:
- The reward for five participating restaurants was a $10 gift card
- The reward for fifteen was a $50 gift card
That second tier was the interesting one. Fifteen restaurants in thirty days was a real commitment, not a casual browse, and it was clearly designed to push people past their usual three or four favorites into places they would otherwise skip.
The 2026 List Skewed New, and That Was the Point
Looking at who was on the roster, a pattern showed up fast. Geronimo Tequila Bar and Southwest Grill had been open since January. Amar Mediterranean Bistro, along with its casual sibling Amar Sandwich Shop, had arrived in Delray in late 2025. Gabriella's Modern Italian had been serving its take on classic Italian dishes since early 2025 and had just added weekend brunch. These weren't restaurants padding out an anniversary list. They were recent arrivals still building the kind of local following that turns a first-time visit into a standing Tuesday reservation.
That was alongside the restaurants that didn't need the introduction. Deck 84 had been the quintessential Intracoastal dinner-with-live-music spot for years, and it was on the list too, not because it needed the traffic but because participating was simply what you did if you were a downtown restaurant in September. Bourbon Steak, Le Colonial and Tropical Smokehouse rounded out a list that spanned steakhouse to Vietnamese to barbecue, so the discount wasn't concentrated in any one kind of dining. It was genuinely across the board.
Two Passes, One Month
Restaurant Month didn't happen in isolation this year. It overlapped entirely with Flavor South Florida, the countywide dining promotion that spanned roughly 122 miles from Boca Raton to Sebastian and featured more than 100 participating restaurants for 2026, with a new podcast, Forking Around with Flavor South Florida, scheduled to launch alongside it.
Gabriella's owner Frankie Brusco told the Boca Raton Tribune that the DDA welcomed the restaurant with open arms when it opened, and he was using the overlap to join Flavor South Florida for the first time as well. For a diner in Delray, that meant the same thirty days carried two separate sets of specials, one hyperlocal and one running the length of the county, and there was no rule against using both.
The Restaurant That Wasn't on the List
Here's the detail that most roundups of this event miss entirely. Drinking Pig BBQ was set to open at 22 W. Atlantic Avenue inside Sundy Village in September, and it was not on the official Restaurant Month participant roster.
Chef Raheem Sealey's barbecue started as a pandemic pop-up in North Miami-Dade that sold out daily before it ever had a storefront, and its first brick-and-mortar location in Coconut Grove built on that same momentum before the Delray outpost was even announced. Restaurant Month gave every participating kitchen a reason to welcome neighbors during a quiet stretch, and Drinking Pig BBQ already had a following in place.
That was a useful filter for diners deciding where to eat in September. The list at DowntownDelrayBeach.com showed which restaurants were offering special menus and deals during the month. A brand-new opening with a following this loud and no discount attached was worth trying without waiting for one.
How the Month Worked
A few practical notes on how the month worked:
- Diners could sign up for the mobile pass before their first dinner so the check-in counted toward the five- or fifteen-restaurant reward.
- For a mix of a newcomer and a standby, diners could try Amar Mediterranean Bistro one night and Deck 84 the next, since both were on the list for very different reasons.
- The roster was the place to check for any Sundy Village restaurants joining mid-month; Drinking Pig BBQ was not on it.
- The window closed September 30. Flavor South Florida's countywide specials ran over the same span, so both promotions ended before October.
The month did not require planning a special occasion. The discount offered a reason to try a quiet Tuesday, and reading the list was its own small piece of local knowledge.
